Studio Settanta7 tells: a green project for the Scientific High School "A.M. Enriques Agnoletti"
From concept to building, an in-depth analysis of an innovative architectural transformation.
In the heart of the Tuscany region, a new chapter in the evolution of education has materialised through an ambitious architectural project. The "A.M. Enriques Agnoletti" Scientific High School has embraced innovation and sustainability, and to unveil the behind the scenes of this transformation, we spoke with the experts from Studio Settanta7, the architectural studio behind this avant-garde project vision.
How did the idea of transforming the Scientific High School into a green educational hub come about?
The idea arose from the strategic partnership between the metropolitan city, the municipalities of Sesto and Campi Bisenzio and the Tuscany region. The old building was sold to the pharmaceutical company to allow for its expansion, thus paving the way for an ambitious project. Our goal was threefold: to create a cutting-edge training centre in a strategic area, to provide the school with a safe and innovative structure, and at the same time to promote the creation of new jobs.
What were the main pillars of your architectural project?
We focused the design around three functional blocks, with an eye to the pre-existing urban grid. Our challenge was to harmonise the alignment with the church and the east-west orientation. This led to the creation of three courtyards, welcoming spaces that serve as access and reception points for users. We adopted a distinctive approach to the building fronts: one characterised by wide and open windows towards the community and another more rigorous and functional for the university laboratories.
How was the sustainable aspect integrated into the project?
Sustainability was at the centre of our conception. The building is designed to reduce management costs thanks to extremely low energy consumption. In fact, the new high school is a nearly zero energy (N-ZEB) building. In addition, we committed to minimising the impact on the surrounding environment, in an area that once had an agricultural vocation. The design took into account the local hydrological conditions to ensure hydraulic invariance.
What was the role of ceramic floors in your sustainable designs?
Ceramic floors played a key role in the durability and aesthetics of the spaces. They were chosen based on functional needs: traditional gluing on screed for the scientific laboratories and a raised system for the computer classrooms, both with Reden ceramic surface. Furthermore, the services, bathrooms and changing rooms have been lined with Cinca Nova Arquitectura stoneware elements to create a chromatic mix that enhances the different functions.
What impact has the new Scientific High School had on the community?
Our design considered the interconnection with the community. The entrance system was designed to host extracurricular activities, making the structure multifunctional and open to the city. This reflects the inclusive and future-oriented approach that is defining the character of this educational institution.
What is your message to the students who will attend this new educational environment?
Our message is to inspire students to embark on an exciting learning journey within an avant-garde environment, designed to nurture their creativity, curiosity and success. We are confident that this new structure will create a bridge between education and the future, giving rise to enlightened minds and contributing to the sustainable development of the Sesto community.
